Writing English is not only translating your thoughts into proper English vocabulary while showing off your knowledge of grammar. The reader also needs to follow your story and
not wander off. You want to keep his attention in spite of many distractions, because you need to get your message across.
Therefore you need Linking Words in your writing.
The four main types of Linking Words which connect sentences and guide your thoughts are:
- Listing: First, Second(ly), Next, Finally
- Adding: Moreover, Besides, Furthermore, Additionally
- Contrast: However, Although, In spite of
- Reason/ Result: Therefore, As a result (of), Because of
Exercise:
Below you read the bare bones story, no linking words connect the sentences. Rewrite by adding linking words from these four categories. Then everything is coming together.
Minutes of a meeting:
1 Opening:
I would like to thank you all for attending this emergency meeting. I would like to thank our host John Brown who offered his office for meeting at such short notice.
2 Finance:
The economic crisis gave us no choice, but to file for bankruptcy. We seemed to recover.
We tried to delay payments, but failed. We had a fatal accident in one of our plants. It appeared that investments had not worked out well.
3 Employment:
… of all this 100 staff had to be dismissed without prospects of return in the new organisation. We will fully cooperate with the employment agency to support you in finding a new job.
